FINDING BEAUTY IN THE BEAUTIFUL DISASTER.
We never planned on starting a clothing brand. We were just a family living life, until one little girl came along and changed the way we saw just about everything.
Our daughter was born with a congenital heart defect, and suddenly life looked a little different than we had imagined.
I've learned that life can be beautiful and a disaster all at once. Not because the hard parts are beautiful, but because somewhere in the middle of the chaos, the fear, and everything you can't control, there's still so much good to be found.
It took me a long time to see that beauty. But looking back, I realize it was there all along. I just wasn't ready to see it.
It was in the labor and delivery nurses who hugged me when I was scared. The doctor who followed Anthony into the hallway just to give him a hug. The nurses at Children's Hospital Colorado who stopped by to check on our girl, even when they weren't assigned to her. The doctors who kept her picture on their fridge.
And it was in our family and friends who showed up for us in ways big and small, near and far. The ones who checked in, celebrated the tiniest victories, listened when we needed to talk, and reminded us that we weren't facing any of it alone. The people who made room for the hard days without letting us forget about the good ones. Some were right there beside us, others were miles away, but we felt their love all the same.
Looking back, the beauty wasn't in what was happening to us. It was in the people who surrounded us while we were going through it.
I often think of her heart defect as a shadow that follows me.
Some days, the sun is shining on my face. Life feels normal. She's just a little girl being a little girl. We're laughing, making memories, and living all the ordinary moments that suddenly feel so extraordinary.
But I know that shadow is still behind me. It's not something I can outrun or wish away.
And sometimes, the sun shifts.
The shadow grows, and we're reminded that another test, another procedure, or another unknown could be waiting around the corner. We're preparing to step into more of that unknown with her heart, and I don't think I'll ever get used to that part.
But here's what I do know.
I refuse to let the fear of what could happen steal the beauty of what's happening right in front of us.
I don't want our story to be defined by the things we couldn't control. I want it to be about what we chose to do with them. The memories we made, the chances we took, the things we built, and the life we lived along the way.
And somewhere in all of that, Heartbeat & Co. was born.
What started as a creative outlet became something I couldn't stop dreaming about. A chance to take something deeply personal and turn it into something bigger. A lifestyle brand rooted in courage, connection, and the belief that every heartbeat matters.
We create premium, everyday apparel that's more than just something you wear. Pieces with personality and purpose. Pieces that spark conversations, bring people together, celebrate courage, and remind us to live with a little more heart.
Because if this journey has taught us anything, it's that everyone has a story. Everyone faces something they didn't see coming. And there's something pretty powerful about choosing compassion, finding courage, and making something good out of the unexpected.
Some of us know the heart journey firsthand. Others simply believe in showing up, being kind, and leaving the world a little better than we found it.
There's room for all of us here.
Our little girl may be the reason this story began, but what we're building was never meant to be just about us.
We're not defined by what we've been through. But we'd be lying if we said it hasn't shaped who we are.
AND TO THOSE OF YOU READING THIS, WELCOME.
To our Heartbeats who have been here since the beginning, who have loved us, lifted us up, and carried us through more than you'll ever know—thank you. You are part of this story, and we wouldn't be here without you.
To those just finding us, whether you're here for the clothes, our story, or navigating a heart journey of your own, we're so glad you're here.
And if you or someone you love is facing a heart diagnosis, it's shitty. I'm sorry this is part of your story.
It's okay to be angry, scared, or wish things were different. You can love your life and still hate this part of it. You don't have to be strong every day or find the silver lining in everything.
But I promise, there's still beauty to be found. You don't have to see it today. Trust me it took me a very long time, too.
Whatever brought you here, there's a place for you.
We're not here because we have it all figured out. Far from it. We're just choosing to find the good, make something meaningful, and enjoy this beautiful, messy life along the way.
And the beautiful part?
We're still writing it.
With a whole lot of heart,
Ashley & Anthony
